Alaska Airlines was founded 75 years ago on the dreams of early Alaska aviation pioneers who wanted to make a difference within their communities. That spirit of service remains today. It's another part of what we call “Alaska Spirit in Action.”

Alaska Spirit and Community - Alaska Airlines has a proud history of contribution, outreach and sponsorship in the communities we serve. This involvement is a fundamental part of who we are as a company, and is founded on two of our core corporate values — Alaska Spirit and Caring. From the United Way and Make-A-Wish Foundation to the Iditarod and the Mariners, it is with great pride that we say, “yes, we can help” to so many worthy and wonderful causes. Social/Community Services

From the Make-A-Wish Foundations to the 4-H Puppy Raisers for the Guiding Eyes program, Alaska Airlines has established many partnerships within our communities. Our in-kind support of air transportation enables many organizations to raise money, grant special wishes to children and even help puppies learn to fly with “proper manners.”

Our employees, too, are involved in their own neighborhoods. Across our system, from Alaska to Mexico and from West to East Coast, our employees use their hearts and hands serving as board members with non-profit organizations, volunteering in their communities and participating in fundraisers. Alaska Airlines was the 2006 Make-A-Wish Honorary Chair at the Spring Gala & Auction that raised $600,000 for the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Alaska, Montana, Northern Idaho and Washington.

Medical (Emergency/Research)

Alaska Airlines regularly responds to the need for health and human services relief, especially in the state of Alaska, where the limited transportation infrastructure limits access to medical facilities. Through in-kind contributions, we assist hundreds of individual emergency and medical transportation needs. Our partnership with Angel Flight West and the Al Aska (Alaska) Shrine provides well over 1,000 complimentary passenger seats each year for those needing treatment in another city.

Alaska Airlines was honored to receive the 2006 Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center E. Donnall Thomas Medal of Achievement award for its human services efforts. The award was accepted in collaboration with our employees, who make significant contributions to cancer research and other humanitarian causes.

Environmental Responsibility

With roots in a land of pristine natural beauty and wonder, we believe in doing the right thing for our environment. In an active effort to reduce commute issues in the cities we serve, a variety of incentives to encourage carpooling, telecommuting and use of public transit are available to our employees through our ‘Commute Trip Reduction Program.’

Also, a group of employees from departments across the company formed the “Green Team.” Their purpose is to provide a forum and vehicle for environmentally conscious employees to share, learn and act upon opportunities within the company. The goal is to reduce negative environmental impacts and ensure company policies and practices support and advance environmental sensitivity and stewardship.
