Alaska Airlines, Horizon Air Open Second Phase Of "Airport Of The Future" In Seattle

Alaska Airlines and Horizon Air today opened the second of three "Airport of the Future" check-in islands at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport. The islands ultimately will replace the entire ticket counter.

Since the carriers unveiled the first phase of their patented check-in facility in Seattle last October, the average time for customers to receive their boarding pass and check bags has been cut in half.

When the project is completed this summer, the check-in area will remain the same size, however, customer service space will increase 55 percent to 14,000 square feet because offices have been moved to the mezzanine level and remaining ticket counters will be gone.

Alaska Airlines debuted its Airport of the Future check-in facility at Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport in 2004. The carrier has implemented smaller-scale designs in Los Angeles; Boise, Idaho; Puerto Vallarta, Mexico; and several other locations in the state of Alaska.
