Cabin smoke prompts emergency evacuation of Sunday flight at LGB

Paramedics treat two passengers, one flight attendant

August 20, 2006

Alaska Airlines conducted an emergency passenger evacuation of a Seattle-Long Beach flight Sunday after flight attendants notified the pilots of smoke in the aircraft cabin shortly after landing at Long Beach Airport.

Just following the 6:06 p.m. landing of Flight 338, smoke developed in the cabin of the MD-80 aircraft. The pilots ordered an evacuation via the emergency slides while the airplane was on the taxiway. All 140 passengers and five crew members were evacuated and later transported by bus to the airport terminal.

Airport paramedics met the aircraft and treated two passengers and one flight attendant for injuries apparently sustained during evacuation. One passenger is seeking further evaluation at a nearby hospital. Another passenger consulted with paramedics but later declined any medical treatment at the airport.

Maintenance and Engineering is checking the aircraft to determine the cause of the smoke and will repair the airplane before it returns to service.
