First scholarship recipients chosen
in honor
of Flight 261 Captain and First Officer Posted
February 10, 2003
Five students
have been chosen as the first recipients of scholarships honoring the
memories of Captain Ted Thompson and First Officer Bill Tansky.
They are Chris Allum, son of Seattle-based Flight Attendant Carmen Allum;
Jessica Amburgey, daughter of Oakland-based Aircraft Technician Robert
Amburgey; Isaac Helmericks, a Prudhoe Bay-based ramp service
agent; Lisa Lamkin, daughter of Beverly Lamkin, a maintenance &
engineering systems manager for Horizon Air; and Jennifer Mefford, daughter
of retired Captain Jeffrey Mefford. Each will receive $1,000 toward
his or her educational pursuit. "Selecting recipients from among 53
applicants was exciting and difficult because we felt that each one was
worthy of recognition," said Marilyn Thompson, president of the Ted
Thompson/Bill Tansky Scholarship board and widow of Captain Thompson. The
scholarship is funded by an annual golf tournament which this year is slated
for April 28 in Temecula, Calif. Watch Alaska’s World for details
